"I remember trying my first curved blade. Everyone else in the slalom competition was using them and I did it only to be sure I wasn't missing a competitive edge. I gave it a good, several week test, finally declaring I couldn't notice any improvement.

"Then I switched back to my straight blade and Whoa! Where did all the power go? Curved blades offer lots more power that you will notice mainly when you don't have it."

Curved blades

Demon

Galasport has done it again with its new C-1 paddle designed specifically for Rodeo & Extreme WW.

Manufacturer's notes: The Dihedral blade and shafts are made from the highest quality epoxy; we have constructed it in a way to make use of the best of both carbon and J.R.S material. As a result of our construction the paddle blade is able to absorb energy in a unique way that avoids damage to both paddle and person. As a result, your muscles joints and bones stay intact. The blade has been reinforced where it is most necessary bated on careful research and development, so you can depend on your paddle to hold together in the harshest of conditions. (The blade's edge is reinforced with Carbon to greatly reduce wear.) The demon shaft is cone shaped in design and has a plastic oval grip for maximum control. We are now producing these paddles in MAXI & MIDI sizes, both in platinum and carbon/aramid versions to suit all.

The Midi – the first small size blade designed specifically for the hole riding freestyler. It has an incredible back stroke which is ever so important in hole riding. On its international maiden voyage to the pre worlds in Graz 2002 it took 3rd place. L = 480 mm , W = 200 mm

The Maxi – 5% larger surface area is sure to please the one who prefers the larger blade. It will also outperform any of its competitors on a whitewater run.

Width of the blade: 205 mm – 8,1in., Length of the blade : 480 mm – 18,9 in.
Weight: 590g/complete paddle

GREY OWL PADDLE Ltd.

Traditional paddles

These paddles are distinguished by their long slender blades and overall resilience. Originally carved from a single piece of wood, the blades were narrow to prevent warpage, but with a long enough area to propel the craft effectively. The blades is scaled to the shaft and gets larger as the shaft length increases. Generally a smaller blade area then our recreational line, these paddles are a pleasure to use for a day in, day out, all day paddling. The longer blade limits these paddles to deeper water (2' - 3' minimum). Though blade shapes vary in design, intended usage remains the same. Everyone has personal blade preferences, so try before you buy and choose the shape you like. In addition to varnish, we offer the option of linseed oil as an alternative finish on solid wood paddles.

Recreational paddles

The Grey Owl Recreational line is characterized by the multi-laminated designs of contrasting woods, and blades that remain constant in size throughout different lengths. Generally shorter and wider than the traditional paddles, this line offers the widest range of canoeing applications. Whether you paddle on entry-level flatwater, moving water, wilderness rivers, whitewater or in freestyle competitions, Grey Owl has the paddle shape and size to suit your needs.

Scout Laminated bass construction with pear grip. Has all the basic features of our top line models. An ideal entry-level paddle

Picture of the paddle

Voyageur Laminated ash and bass shaft; cherry pear grip. Similar usage to River, with wider and shorter blade that is more effective in the shallows.

Bent shaft paddles

Once only found in the domain of the marathon racer, these efficient paddles have gained popularity in recent years with recreational paddles. In addition to all the features found in our recreational line, these paddles have a continuous, 12-ply bass, form bent shaft.

The design of the bent shaft offers a more efficient paddling style. Because of the offset shaft angle, the blade remains more or less perpendicular to the canoe throughout the stroke, maximizing the direct, reverse thrust. If this sounds vaguely familiar, it's Newton's third law of motion.

The stroke, when perfected, has a trunk twist at the beginning. It is shorter and quicker than the long sweep of the traditional stroke This gives the additional advantage of bringing the hip and trunk muscles into play, distributing the work of paddling over more and larger muscle groups. With a straight shaft paddle, it is difficult in a seated position to use more than your arms, back and shoulders.

When canoeing with a conventional paddle, the blade makes an arc through the water. At the entry and exit points the paddle loses efficiency because the blade is in a more vertical plane to the canoe, moving the water up and down. This will cause the boat to move like a porpoise through the water, bobbing and slowing the glide of the canoe.

We didn't invent this stuff, our hats off to the racers who did. Long hours on the water make every technical advantage a windfall. But we know a good idea when we see one, and our goal has always been to put good ideas into production.

  Mohawk

MOHAWK 8   "T" grip

Manufacturer's comments: The Mohawk paddle is constructed with a high impact plastic blade and grip and anodized aluminum shaft. It combines performance, durability and no maintenance at a reasonable price. The Mohawk paddle with the 8” x 20” blade is available in a “T” grip (pear grip by special order only). (See price list). We believe the shaft diameter of 1-1/8” is the most comfortable size for most hands. A plastic shaft grip eliminates the problem of aluminum oxide “rub-off” and cold hands in cool weather. The 8” wide paddle is lightweight (a 54” paddle weighs approx. 28oz and floats horizontally in the water).
