Definitions:
Bulkhead is the foam wall (in plastic kayaks, fiberglass in fiberglass hulls) separating the hatch (dry storage compartment) from the centre cockpit ( the seat and pedal area)

Rotomolded polyethylene plastic hulls are formed by pouring plastic powder in measured quantity into a steel mold, placing in a cradle in a gas fired oven and heating up to a pre-determined temperature while rotating the mold until the molten plastic clings to the walls of the mold, then allowing it to cool to a point when the mold is opened and the kayak is gentilly pulled out, cooled and finished with seat, pedals, bulkhead and handles . The product is a one piece, strong and flexible hull. It is the least expensive method of manufacture.

Boreal Design- Ookpik single & double

The Ookpik (single) and Kasko are almost the same except for cockpit size and width. The basic model comes equipped with rear hatch
but it is recommended to have both front and rear hatch and the rudder is a good option for longer expeditions.
The Ookpik Duo is available with 2 hatches and a rudder as good options.

Basic Accessories Required

• A good paddle. For short distance, an aluminum shaft, plastic blade from $59.00
• PFD ( personal floatation device or lifejacket) should be worn at all times
• a paddle float to allow re-entry after a spill
• a hand pump to empty the cockpit.
• A sprayskirt ( or spraydeck) to keep waves and spray out of the cockpit

Safety notes

For safe paddling you require:

• A good quality paddle ( 2 piece is best for take-apart or feathering the blades)
• A spare paddle ( could be of lesser quality but strong enough to get home with)
• A PFD- i.e personal floatation device (lifejacket) to be worn at all times on the water
• A paddle float to help re-enter the boat after a spill.
• A marine hand pump to pump out the cockpit after recovery
• A proper fitting spray skirt ( sometimes called Spraydeck ) either nylon or neoprene
• A 15 metre float rope in a bag. (Regulation Rope bag) is required by Coast Guard.
• In cold weather or cold water, wear a wetsuit and paddling jacket, hat and gloves.
• We suggest you take a self rescue course and practice once a year, doing a wet exit.
• For long distance and open water trips take navigational aids, such as compass, charts GPS, survival clothing, etc.:
